The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating a possible phosphorous grenade discovered at Samoa Beach this afternoon, about a mile from the North Jetty.
Sergent Bryan Taylor of the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office told the Outpost that the Explosive Ordinance Disposal team is deploying Bomb Bot as a precaution.
“We believe it’s a phosphorous grenade, which is commonly used by the Coast Guard,” Taylor said. “Our EOD folks are on their way to look at it and confirm that.”
LoCO reader Robert Stele said he was checking out the high surf with his daughter when he happened across the people who discovered the possible explosive.
“They had a photo of what it looked like a pipe bomb sticking straight out of the sand,” Stele said. “It looked like a three foot stainless-steel canister with an orange sticker on it. They guy I was talking to said it was a governmental sticker that said ammonium on it.”
Information will be updated as it comes in.
