Winter begins tomorrow, technically, and if you’re eager to scratch that holiday-spirit itch, social justice advocates will be collecting food and warm clothing for Eureka’s homeless population at the gazebo in Old Town this evening in honor of Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day.
Local volunteer James Decker said the annual event is dedicated to the memory of homeless people who have died during cold winter nights.
“The winter solstice is the longest night of the year, so it’s generally pretty cold,” Decker said. “This is the day where we remember the folks who were lost to the streets at night and try to make it a little easier out here for folks who are still with us.”
Social justice groups People’s Actions for Rights and Community and Redwood Curtain Cop Watch have joined forces to provide food, drink and music for tonight’s memorial.
However, Decker said the activist groups are counting on community members to bring down food and clothing to keep the people warm during the upcoming winter months.
Decker said the memorial begins around 5 p.m. and will feature live music, a candlelight vigil and public speakers.
“People can come by to donate things or just come to leer a little bit,” Decker said. “There will be people speaking about what it’s like for those without any place to live.”
