UPDATE 10:35 p.m.: Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department press release:

…Fortuna Fire Crews responded to a fully involved structure fire in an attached garage of a residence on the 2400 block of School Street early this morning. Fire was contained to the garage however; the residence did receive major smoke damage throughout.

While all 5 residents managed to get out of the home, 2 pets remained trapped in the garage. Firefighters were successful in rescuing one of the two which was later reported to be doing well. Cause of the fire is still under investigation but is believed to have been the result of an electrical issue.

At approximately 2 a.m. today, a fire on School Street in Fortuna consumed a residential garage and injured a dog. When firefighters arrived, the garage was fully involved.  The first crews on the scene described “a large amount of flames.” 

A spokesperson for the Fortuna Police said that the cause is believed to be an electrical issue. No one was injured but the garage was a total loss.

Scanner traffic indicates that the dog suffered from burns and smoke inhalation.
