UPDATE 1/31: PG&E says that the pole is up and power restored to all customers as of 7:49 a.m.
UPDATE 11:21 p.m.: A PG&E spokesperson said that power has been restored to all but 86 customers as of 10:56 p.m. He estimated that the remaining customers will be without power for another four to six hours.

About 30 minutes ago now, a hit & run driver took out the power pole at 7th and J Street knocking the power grid out on the north end of Eka

UPDATE 9:44 p.m.: Scanner traffic indicates that a white vehicle hit the power pole and then left the scene. Sparking wires were also reported. Telephone reported in the roadway.

Original post: Eureka is in the dark tonight. Or at least a large part of it is. (See map below.)
A major power outage struck downtown Eureka at approximately 9:22 p.m. 1600 customers are without electricity. PG&E has not yet determined the cause of the outage.
