Rio Dell Police Department press release:
In the early morning of Wednesday, May 6, the Rio Dell Police Department conducted a special operation using marked and unmarked vehicles. The purpose of the operation was to identify and arrest individuals associated with a series of property crimes that has been occurring in the city since early April of this year. During the operation, officers attempted to contact a group of suspicious individuals in the downtown area who then ran from police. Two of the individuals, both juveniles, were detained. A subsequent investigation determined that the juveniles were suspected of committing a series of thefts from vehicles and attempted thefts from vehicles throughout Rio Dell, including crimes predating this recent series of events. One of the detained juveniles was arrested and a third juvenile, suspected of criminal activity, was identified. One of the juveniles resides in Rio Dell, another in Scotia, and the third individual in the Fortuna area.
It appears that all of the vehicles that were entered were unlocked. The Police Department would like to remind residents of Rio Dell to lock their vehicles and remove valuable items from sight when they are not in use.
