California Highway Patrol press release:
On the night of Sunday, September 13, an elderly driver sustained major injuries after driving off US-101 and overturning before colliding into a tree.
At approximately 7:15 p.m., 82 year old Leland Franklin Smallwood of Crescent City was driving his black 2014 Toyota Camry southbound on US-101, north of Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway. For reasons still under investigation, the Toyota exited the roadway and ultimately overturned before colliding into a tree. Smallwood was extricated from the vehicle by Calfire personnel and transported by ground ambulance to Mad River Community Hospital with major injures. He was then transported by air ambulance to Mercy Medical Center in Redding.
DUI is not believed to be a factor and Smallwood was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the collision. The California Highway Patrol is investigating this traffic collision.
