UPDATE, 3:26 p.m.: The EPD’s Brittany Powell has a little more information. The injured man was 28 years old and was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, she says.

###

UPDATE, 3:09 p.m.: The injured person was a man in his late 20s, according to the Eureka Police Department’s Brittany Powell. He suffered major head injuries, but was conscious and speaking when he was taken away to the hospital, and was responsive to questions.

Powell said that the initial investigation shows that the man was, in fact, riding a bicycle when he was struck. She said that their current understanding is that he was crossing Fourth Street, outside the crosswalk, when he was hit.

UPDATE, 3 p.m.: The injured person has been taken away by ambulance.

###

Traffic on Fourth Street through Eureka is down to one lane, after a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle a few minutes ago.

The accident happened in front of the Patriot Gas Station, at the intersection of Fourth and R — just at the turnoff to the Samoa Bridge.

Initial reports had the person hit as being a bicyclist, but that appears to be incorrect. (UPDATE: Now it no longer appears to be incorrect.) Also, CHP dispatch has corrected its original information, which is that the person struck was killed. They’re calling it a “major injury” collision at the moment.

We’ll update when we know more.
