The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Explosives Ordinance Disposal unit was sent to defuse a “suspicious device” found in a yard near the corner of Eighth and O streets in Eureka this morning.

Brittany Powell, public information officer for the Eureka Police Department, said that the incident began at about 8:30 this morning when a caller spotted the device, pictured above, in his yard. Officers responded to the scene and quickly called the bomb squad, which “rendered the device safe,” in Powell’s words.

Powell said that technicians determined that the device was, in fact, explosive.
