On Sunday, August 7, 2016, a 2013 Hyundai Elantra was traveling on SR-299 westbound, east of Blue Lake, when it drove off the roadway and collided into a rock embankment.
On August 7, 2016, at approximately 2222 hours, CHP officers responded to a traffic collision on SR-299, east of mile post marker 12.5. A 2013 Hyundai Elantra, driven by, Andrew John Schwartz, age 30, of Arcata, drove off of the roadway and collided with a rock embankment. As a result of this collision, Schwartz and his passenger, Miranda Kayleen Willet (who was not wearing a seatbelt), age 21, of Rio Dell, sustained major injuries. They were transported by ambulance to Mad River Community Hospital in Arcata. Drugs are suspected to have been a factor in this collision and Schwartz was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence.
