The Kinetic Museum has moved from its tiny jam-packed location across from the Co-op in Eureka to a glorious spot on A Street. The museum has an ever growing collection of kinetic sculptures, costumes, bribes and memorabilia from the Kinetic Grand Championship and needed more space.
The KGC is the ‘Triathlon of the Art World’ that all Humboldt knows and loves. Year after year on Memorial Day weekend zany participants pedal from Arcata to Ferndale, across land and through mud, sand and water with their homemade kinetic sculptures. The race has been going for nearly 50 years and the museum takes great pride in its legacy.
It’s home to a spaceship, a bumblebee, and even the pentacycle that started it all, created by race founder Hobart Brown. Plus it’s got a new addition called “Beest” donated by Adam Savage, former co-host of the TV show MythBusters.
“This is great,” said museum director, Christopher “Blaze” Boyle. “When you walk in here it really has a fun and playful feel and it’s magnetic. It’s draws people in and we really hope to satisfy everybody’s curiosity in the months to come.”
The new location will also host events and has an artists cooperative called the Greasy Gears Gallery. In this LoCO video report we explore it all, “For the Glory.”
