A stretch of Eureka’s California Street is currently blocked, as Humboldt Bay Fire winds down a call that came in a few minutes ago.

Multiple engines and a command unit raced out to the 3300 block of California after receiving word of a residential structure fire. The back room of a single-family home was reportedly filling with smoke. Arcata Fire sent engines to cover Eureka-area calls while Humboldt Bay tackled the emergency.

Once firefighters got on scene, though, they discovered — as often happens — that this was not a worst-case scenario. According to Humboldt Bay Fire’s Bill Gillespie, the problem turned out to be that too many computers were plugged into a too-janky power cord, causing the smoke.

Humboldt Bay Fire set up fans to aerate the place. Arcata Fire went home. PG&E came out to the scene to check out this problematic electrical situation.
