Numerous Fortuna residents wrote us last night after witnesses what seemed to be a very bad vehicle v. pedestrian accident on South Fortuna Boulevard last night, right in front of Pepper’s restaurant.

The news is not as dire as it seemed to people who witnessed the crash. According to Sgt. Aaron Starcher of the Fortuna Police Department, the person who was struck — a 22-year-old woman — is in Redwood Memorial, and in stable condition.

Starcher said that the Fortuna Police Department responded to the accident at about 7:30 p.m. While paramedics took the woman to the hospital, police put together what had happened. The woman and her boyfriend were walking across the street toward the restaurant, Starcher said, when a driver waiting in the turn lane made their move, failing to notice the couple. The woman was struck and went up onto the vehicle.

No arrests were made, Starcher said, and DUI is not suspected to be a factor.
