The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office has called off the search for a suspect who likely evaded authorities by jumping into the Trinity River in Hoopa last night.

Sgt. Brian Taylor of the Sheriff’s Office told the Outpost that the suspect was originally believed to be the culprit of a stabbing that occurred Thursday night on Marshall Lane in Hoopa. However, the stabbing suspect has since been arrested, and is confirmed to be a different person.

Authorities can not confirm the name of the person at large, but he is believed to be a specific suspect wanted for a felony parole violation.

“We ran a boat up and down the river, the sheriff’s posse was out there, as well as special services deputies and the coast guard helicopter,” Taylor said. “We’re placing him as a missing person at this point.”

When officers approached the suspect last night, he fled toward a river bank behind the Lucky Bear Casino. The sheriff’s office was unable to determine from the search, if the suspect drown or got away.

The suspect of the unrelated stabbing has been identified Charles McCovey IV of Hoopa.

The stabbing victim was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
