Early this morning a man sitting on the C Street Market Square was stabbed twice, reportedly during a confrontation with five juveniles. Local community watch Facebook page Operation Safe Streets - Eureka noted the stabbing online as it was playing out over the scanner. This morning, the Outpost reached out to Eureka Police Captain Steve Watson who provided us a bit more information about the incident.
According to Watson, officers were dispatched to the corner of First and C streets at about 12:18 a.m. on a report of a stabbing. Once there, they located the victim sitting on a bench with two stab wounds to the upper torso. The victim was transported to the hospital by medical personnel. His wounds are considered non-life threatening.
The victim told officers that a group of five juveniles had been setting off firecrackers in the vicinity. Eventually the youths approached the man and asked him if he “wanted some dynamite.” He did not, he told them, but the interaction soon escalated from a verbal to a physical altercation involving most, if not all, of the group. During the fight the man was stabbed with an unknown weapon before his assailants fled the scene, possibly east down First Street.
Officers checked the area and found no one, said Watson. No witnesses were located.
