Smoke was seen to be drifting from the building that houses Chapala Restaurant a few moments ago. A caller saw it wafting up from the rear staircase to the building, which leads up to some second- and third-floor apartments.
Humboldt Bay Fire ordered up a bunch of resources to roll to the scene in case this was a serious thing. But the first units arrived and discovered that it was not so serious. Something was on fire, but that thing was caught before it grew into a bigger thing. They ended up ripping off some siding and a bannister to get at the smoldering, and canceled most of the rest of the response.
Lost Coast Outpost reporters Andrew Goff and Ryan Burns, both of whom were on scene, said that Chapala patrons continued lunching throughout.
