From the Rio Dell Police Department:
On June 22nd , 2016 at about 1900 hours officers responded to the area of the 300 block of 1st Avenue in Rio Dell for a report of a subject who had been shot. The gunshot victim was located and medical assistance provided for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the subjects leg. The subject was transported via ambulance to Redwood Memorial Hospital.
It was determined through investigation that Whitney Hughes, 33 of Fortuna was discovered inside a residence in the 400 block of 1st Avenue by the resident. There was evidence that Hughes had entered the residence through a window in the back yard. There was an altercation between Hughes and the resident and Hughes ultimately was shot in the leg by the resident. The shooting took place at the threshold of the front door of the residence. The subject who had been shot was transported to the hospital and was subsequently arrested for burglary, elder abuse, intimidating a witness, preventing the victim from calling for assistance, and false imprisonment.
Hughes was medically cleared then transported and booked into the Humboldt County Jail. An investigation will be provided to the Humboldt County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution of Hughes and review to determine if there are any other charges associated with this case that are appropriate.
