Half the face of a downtown Eureka building just suddenly crumbled onto Fifth Street this afternoon, leaving a mound of garbage but — thankfully — no injuries.
Building owner Chuck Heuer was on the scene at 516 Fifth Street within a few minutes of the collapse, which he said was caused by “old age.”
Darin Goodale, owner of the James Darin Joaillier jewelry shop next door, told the Outpost he was outside getting ready to wash his window when the upper part of the building’s facade fell, striking him with debris. He said that the facade had been leaning out from the building for several months.
