Mills tells us that police were called to the scene on report of two people assaulted with a deadly weapon near the corner of Harris and N streets. When they arrived, the suspect fled southbound into a gully fronting Sequoia Park near there.
Officers followed, at which point the suspect — a Jamael Lowery, who is known to police — came at the officers with a knife, saying something to the effect of “you’re going to have to kill me,” Mills said. They were less than 10 feet from the suspect.
At that point, one of them deployed a bean bag gun, hitting Lowery three times. They were then able to take him into custody peaceably.
Mills said that the police department will review the body cam footage captured by the officers. As of this moment, he said he’s pretty proud of his team. “In my opinion, they would have been completely justified in shooting him,” he said.
But their less-lethal training came through, and as a result, he said, the officers were able to “save a life.”
“This is an example of damn good police work,” Mills said.
The victims in the original assault, Mills said, are fine. They’re being interviewed.
