Pedro
Nascimento Furtado passed away peacefully surrounded by his family by
his side on January 22, 2017,
in Arcata after brief illness at the age 83.
Pedro was born December 24, 1933 to Alberto and Serafina Furtado in Ponta da Faja Grande, Flores Azores.
He is survived by his wife Ines Furtado (married 61 years), son Rev Jose Furtado, son Jim Furtado and his wife Keri Furtado, grandchildren Justin and Jenna Furtado, sister Maria L. Furtado, sister in-laws Mary Fatima Furtado and Etelvina Mateus and numerous nieces and nephews in the United States and the Azores Islands.
Pedro was preceded in death by his father Alberto Furtado, mother Serafina Furtado and brother Angelo Furtado.
Pedro immigrated to the United States in 1963. He lived in Arcata for the last 53 years. He was a tireless worker. He worked at local lumber mills Twin Parks, Georgia Pacific and Louisiana Pacific for 20 years. In 1984 he began working with his son Jim in the home building business and contributed well into his seventies. His favorite job was tending to his son’s beef cattle operation. He did this job seven days a week for the last 25 years.
Family and faith were very important to him. He especially enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s activities and watching them perform. He enjoyed sharing the produce of his gardens and fruit trees with family and friends.
Pall bearers will be Tom Anderson, Justin Furtado, Steve Furtado, Dave Sloane, Ryan Sloane and Antonio Valadao.
A rosary followed by a funeral mass will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday January 28 th , 2017 at St. Mary’s Church 1690 Janes Road in Arcata. Interment will follow at St Mary’s Cemetery in Arcata.
The family would like to thank Dr. Barker and the caring staff at Mad River Hospital.
Memorial contributions may be made to Eureka Rescue Mission, St Vincent De Paul’s dinning facility, or the donor’s favorite charity.
