“Oh, someone fucked up.” A LoCO reader comments as they record the blaze.”

An out of control beach bonfire likely set the Samoa dunes ablaze around 9 p.m. last night near Bay Street.

The Samoa Peninsula Fire District Chief Dale Unea tole the Outpost in an email this afternoon that the first crew to respond reported a fire covering a 200 by 100-foot area. And further assistance, including one water tender was also dispatched to the scene.

The fire was contained roughly 40 minutes after firefighters arrived on scene. Crews spend an additional hour and a half doing heavy mop up work due to surrounding driftwood and difficult terrain.

The final size of the fire was reported to be 1.45 acres.
