Evelyn “Tonie” Kubala passed away at home with her family at her side on March 5th in Eureka after a brief illness. She was 83 years old. Tonie was born on March 11, 1933 in Eureka. She was the daughter of George Vosco “Bosco” and Maxine Bonini, both of Eureka.

Tonie attended Eureka City Schools and was a graduate of the class of 1950 at Eureka High School. She attended Humboldt State University. Tonie worked at Eureka Pediatrics for 30 years before retiring in 2003. She loved being around the kids that came to the office and loved to watch them grow up through the years. She kept busy by working at Washington Elementary School after her retirement.

Tonie married Walter Kubala in May of 1965. She had an infectious laugh and lived life to the fullest. Tonie loved flowers and loved to work in her garden. She was a huge sports fan. Tonie rooted for the Dodgers growing up, as her father was a huge Brooklyn Dodger fan. It was challenging when she married Walt, as he was a hardcore San Francisco Giants fan. She eventually saw the light and became a Giants fan later in life. Tonie was such a fan that she actually tracked down the phone number for the Giants “Dugout” once and spoke to a member of the coaching staff. It was a common practice to see Tonie and Walt at every youth, high school, or collegiate sporting event. Tonie was known for decorating her home for every Holiday, which often was publicized in the Times-Standard.

She was preceded in death by her parents, uncles Herb and Bill Barber, brother Randy Wawryzniak, and husband Walter, who passed away August 2, 2006.

Tonie is survived by her siblings Dona Barber, Kerry Sohm, and Gary Bonini, and numerous cousins, her son, Mike Kubala and his wife Elaine of Eureka, CA; daughter, Patty Kubala of Eureka, CA; daughter, Michelle Fitch and husband Tony of Bakersfield, CA; daughter, Cindy Glavich and husband Andrew of Brentwood, CA; son, Joe Kubala of Eureka, CA; grandchildren, Mariha Donaldson and husband Travis of Aliso Viejo, CA; Airin Wyatt and wife Nicole of Milton, FLA; Jason Kubala and wife Marney of Eureka, CA; Katie Kubala and Stu Skelton of Miranda, CA; Gabrielle, Molly, and Carson Glavich of Brentwood, CA; Crimson Fitch of Spokane, WA; Logan Fitch and wife Nikki of Bakersfield, CA; great-grand children Peyton and Dominick Kubala, Aubrey Skelton, Sophia and Leo Wyatt, Dublin Donaldson, and Ember and Sterling Fitch; loving pets Willie and Tilly Kubala.
