If you rent in Humboldt County, chances are owning a pet is not an option. Maybe you lucked out and snagged a cat-friendly apartment. But a dog? Not on your life, buster.
Luckily, in the age of social media, we can forget about our own shortcomings and live vicariously through the joy of others. That’s why LoCO has put together this list of the best local Instagram pooches to follow.
Meet Reuben the Basset. At only one-and-a-half years old, this Humboldt hound is one of the fresher faces on the list, but he’s already leading the pack on Instagram with more than 3,600 followers. Reuben can often be seen walking around Arcata. He has stumpy legs and a heavy frame, but like most Humdogs, Reuben isn’t afraid of getting his paws wet in the ocean, rivers or snow. He also loves a good nap.
2. @ruby_golden_girl
Ruby is a golden retriever who frequently road trips all over Northern California. She’s a regular at the Mad River, Whiskeytown Lake and the Humboldt seashore. Her interests include catching popcorn, birdwatching, sock chewing and guarding toddlers. When she’s not going on adventures, she can be seen chillin’ with her bff @toks_junebug, or slurping a frothy pupaccino. She’s also been known to put on a silly costume from time to time.
3. @toks_junebug
Junebug the Alapaha Blue-Blood bulldog is best pals with @ruby_golden_girl, and naturally the two share similar interests. She’s a 49ers fan and isn’t afraid to cuddle a cat now and again.
4. @louie_licka_nosie
Louie is a Yorkiepoo. That’s a mix between a Yorkshire terrier and a poodle. He was rescued in 2010 and his interests include traveling, camping, stealing socks and giving an unnecessary amount of kisses. This walking cotton ball loves playing at the beach and detests baths.
5. @beans_the_burritoman
Beans “the burrito man” is a chiweenie, part chihuahua, part dachshund — aka a wiener dog. Beans has sandy colored fur and bright green eyes. This rescue dog is new to the Instagram game. He started posting photos just one week ago. Let’s get the burrito man some follows.
6. @sayatheadventuredog
Saya is a McNab collie and an Arcata local. Adventure is her middle name. She often accompanies her humans on backpacking and rock climbing adventures. She loves sporting bandanas and sweet hiking gear.
7. @snorty_the_puggle
Snortimer the beagle-pug mix, aka Snorty the puggle, is a Eureka mutt that loves to play. Ball chasing, tug-of-war, whatevz. Snortimer is also new to the Instagram game, posting his first photo two weeks ago.
“Welcome to my IG,” the post reads. “I’m a rescue puggle who’s getting a second chance at life with my new family in NorCal.”
Honorable mention: Moose Johnson
A man of his years, Moose Johnson is exclusively found on Facebook. He may not be as young as some of these other dogs, but what he lacks in puppy breath, he makes up for in life experience. Moose can often be found bestowing his wisdom upon the journalism students at Humboldt State University. He loves the outdoors and is no stranger to getting skunked. Moose’s posts are often accompanied by witty prose.
