From Humboldt Bay Fire:

At 0126 hours Humboldt Bay Fire units were dispatched to a structure fire at 833 H Street in Eureka. Occupants of a second floor apartment discovered smoke in a kitchen in their unit and evacuated the building. Two Battalion Chiefs, two engines, a truck and squad unit responded to the structure fire.

The first arriving firefighters reported smoke coming from a window of the second floor with occupants on the sidewalk and other residents evacuating the building. Firefighters accessed the apartment and discovered a small fire in the kitchen that had extended into an adjacent wall. Firefighters extinguished the fire and began opening wall spaces to determine the extent of fire spread and damage.

The fire was limited to the apartment kitchen, with damage estimated at $5000 due to the fire spread and smoke damage. Smoke spread throughout the second floor and lingered on the first floor. All occupants were evacuated to ensure they were protected until the building was safe. Smoke was removed from the building and utilities secured.

The cause of the fire was undetermined after an investigation. The fire apartment occupants were displaced due to the fire damage and were provided resources by Humboldt Bay Fire and Red Cross. City of Eureka Building Department officials responded and worked with Humboldt Bay Fire investigators and PG&E to ensure the building was safe to re-occupy. Arcata Fire District provided one engine and a Battalion Chief for coverage of the Eureka area.

There were no injuries and all remaining tenants were able to return to the building. The fire apartment occupants had three pets who were all recovered and returned alive and well to the occupants.
