Steve
Bauer died from complications of pneumonia at St Joseph Hospital in
Eureka. He was 77 years old.
He was born in St. Anthony, Idaho to Henry G. and Mary LaMonte Bauer on January 4, 1941. He grew up on the family farm, loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing with his brothers and running with his dogs. As a member of the Idaho National Guard he spent a year at Fort Sam Houston in Texas immediately after high school graduation. Following his active duty with the National Guard, he came to California in the early 1960s to work for his brother Conn at Bauer Concrete, and later began working for Arthur and Associates, also concrete contractors. He became a managing partner in that company.
In 1962 he married Janet Cain and they had their daughter, Suzanne. Steve adopted Jan’s daughters Deborah and Elizabeth.
Steve enjoyed a variety of recreational activities including motocross racing and scuba diving with his brothers Rick and Phil, and he loved sailing off the waters of the California coast. He was a member of the Encino Yacht Club. He also played golf at some of the fine courses in the Bay Area with his brother Rick and nephew Rick Jr. After long-term health issues curtailed these actives, Steve enjoyed reading, particularly history and the Civil War, which he often discussed at length with his brother Dave.
In 1992, he retired with his wife Jan and moved to Eureka, where he has lived since. Jan died in 1998.
He and Catherine Wood were married in Eureka in 2001. They would have celebrated their 17th wedding anniversary on May 5th, 2018. He truly loved motorcycles. This love of motorcycle riding was something both he and Catherine enjoyed together. He was a member of the Nazarene Church, where he was the greeter. To the kids he was known as the candy man and to anyone that needed or wanted it he was good for a big bear hug.
He was preceded in death by his brothers Conn Bauer, Charlie Bauer, sister Elaine Egloff and daughter Deborah Halsrud-Kurth.
He is survived by his wife Catherine of Eureka, daughters Suzanne (Phil) Livak of San Jose and Elizabeth Bauer of Fresno; sister Merry Van Deusen of Port Angeles, Wash.; brothers David Bauer of San Luis Obispo, Phil (Karen) Bauer of Nevada City, Rick (Donna) Bauer of Grass Valley and Bob (Ethel) Koblenzar of St. Anthony, Idaho; Catherine’s daughters Heather (Brandon) Mellon and Maridee Farmer; sons Christopher Reed and Randy Reed; grandchildren Scott (Kim) Pertel, Genevieve, Jessica, Melissa, Steven, Ileana, Allden, Emerich, Othanel, Emma, twins Leo and Finley; great-grandchildren Johnny, Samantha, Estfan, Julian, Marisa, Michaela, Bethany, Haley, Zaden and Zoe. He also left behind many nieces and nephews.
A memorial will be held Friday, April 27th, 2 pm at Eureka Church of the Nazarene, 2039 E St, Eureka, Pastor Steven Berti presiding. There will be a reception following. Contributions may be made to the Church of the Nazarene or your favorite charity.
