Mary E. Avila went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on April 3, 2018. 

Mary was born in Arcata on April 22, 1938 to Waino & Beryl Anttila.

She briefly lived in Cloverdale, then moved to Arcata, attending Stuart School. She was a baton twirler and active in 4-H and campfire.

She graduated with the honor of a white sweater from Arcata High in 1956.

Mary started her career at Bank of America and married the love of her life, Johnnie.

They started a dairy business in Metropolitan, which they lost in the 1964 flood. Ever-determined, they started up again in Arcata Bottoms.They raised five children.

Mary was a leader for Arcata Bottom 4-H in baton, sewing, dairy and beef, and was a community leader for 15 years. She loved music, dance, tap and jazz.

She was a member of the Merry Melody Makers, which brought her great joy. She enjoyed her AHS reunions and BOA luncheons and always bringing her camera along.

She loved wearing jewelry, earning the nickname “Grandma Jewelry” 

Mary is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Johnnie, sister Darlene, children Coleen, Renee, Lance and their spouses. Jonene, Shawn and their significant others. Numerous grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Rosary will be held April 12th. 7 p.m. at Paul’s Chapel Arcata.

Service’s will be held Friday April 13th, 10:30 a.m. at St Mary’s Church Arcata.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Red Cross, any Humboldt 4-H Club or St Mary’s Church.
