Approximate location of the eight-acre fire currently burning out near the Southern Humboldt-Trinity line.

Firefighters for Calfire — the state agency responsible for most of our backwoods wildlands have been kept busy this afternoon, having responded to calls from Kneeland to Alderpoint.

Earlier this afternoon, word came in of a fire up in Butler Valley, between Kneeland and Blue Lake. A vehicle had caught flame, which threatened to spread to the surrounding vegetation. Numerous Calfire ground and air resources were sent to the remote spot, and local several agencies were called in to assist.

Fortunately, according to Calfire’s Paul Savona — a battalion chief based in Calfire’s Fortuna headquarters — that fire was put out before it spread.

No sooner had that situation been brought under control, though, than a new fire broke out near the Casterlin Road area between Blocksburg and Alderpoint. Many resources that had been assigned to Butler Valley were then sent south.

Savona said, a few moments ago, that this fire was at approximately eight acres in size, with a moderate rate of spread. No word on what caused it, yet — Savona himself was the investigator assigned to the fire, and he was just getting ready to head to the scene when the Outpost contacted him.

We’ll update when we find out more.
