The Fortuna boys basketball team suffered its first loss of the season at the Windsor tournament on Friday, falling 73-55 to Menlo-Atherton.

The Huskies were riding a 13-game winning streak to start the season, but fell to the No. 223 team in the state in an upset.

The Huskies came into the week ranked No. 26 in the state.

Drew Gillette led a balanced Fortuna offense in scoring with 19 points, while Donald Willis added 12 points, Bradley Willis 11 and Zac Claus 10.

It was only the second time this season the Huskies have been held under 60 points.

Arcata 55, Martin Luther King 76

The Arcata Tigers lost for the second straight day at the Marin Catholic tournament, falling to Martin Luther King by 21 points.

Jaden Gorge led the Tigers with 12 points on four 3-pointers, while Niko Zambas and Garrett Hall each finished with 10 points.

With the loss, the Tigers dropped to 6-8.

Arcata continues tournament play against Redwood on Saturday at 2 p.m.

St. Bernard’s 28, Novato 77

The Crusaders lost to Novato on day two of the Fort Bragg tournament, after opening with a win over Kelseyville on Thursday.

Logan Thrap scored a team-high 19 points for St. Bernard’s, which had just three players score.

Bode Joyner added seven points and Logan Petrusha two.

The Crusaders. who dropped to 5-4 on the season, will continue tourney play on Saturday.

Girls

St. Bernard’s 49, River City 30

The Crusaders advanced to Saturday’s championship game at the Fort Bragg tournament, with a comfortable win over River City on Friday.

According to head coach Mark Gardner, the performance was probably the best of the year so far for St. Bernard’s, which improved to 9-4.

The Crusaders certainly started the stronger of the two teams, running out to a 13-point lead in the opening quarter.

“We really handled their pressure well, we moved the ball well, and played an excellent defense,” Gardner said.

Senior Emily Gardner finished with a team-high 15 points in the win, while Jasa Sisemore added 11.

Jodie Peterson also had a good game with six points.

The Crusaders put the game out of reach in the third quarter, outscoring River City 19-4 to open up a 27-point gap.

St. Bernard’s plays either fort Bragg or Freedom for the tourney title on Saturday.

“We re looking forward to competing for a championship,” Mark Gardner said.

McKinleyville 37, Silver Creek 51

The Panthers lost their semifinal matchup at the Tracy tournament to Division-I Silver Creek out of San Jose on Friday.

Trailing by nine at halftime, the Panthers closed the gap to just two points early in the fourth quarter, but some late defensive miscues and missed shots cost them down the stretch.

“I think we played pretty well,” McKinleyville head coach Tony McClure said. “Defensively we did a pretty god job up until the fourth quarter.”

Hope Kibby led the Panthers with 10 points on 3-for-4 shooting from the field, while Rayn Tripp did a solid job defensively holding Silver Creek’s Division-I commit in check for much of the game, while finishing with eight points.

The Panthers, who dropped to 10-4 on the season, will play Enoch for third place on Saturday.

Eureka 39, Sequoia 56

The Loggers lost for just the third time all season at the West Coast Jamboree on Friday, falling to Sequoia out of Redwood City.

The loss was also the first in five games for the Eureka girls, who dropped to 9-3.

Makaila Napoleon led the Loggers with 16 points, while teammate Paige Lyons added nine points.

Eureka will play Davis for third place n Saturday.

Sequoia improved to 9-2.

Arcata 57, Deer Valley 41

The Tigers posted one of their more impressive results of the season in an at-times sloppy game against Division-I Deer Valley at the West Coast Jamboree on Friday.

Arcata took control of a tight game in the third quarter, outscoring Deer Valley 23-11, and will now play Pleasanton on Saturday in the consolation game.

Sophia Belton scored a team-high 20 points in the win, while Kali Zanotti added 10 points.

With the win, the Tigers evened their record at 7-7.
