A man wanted after fleeing from deputies Tuesday, July 17, was taken into custody Friday without incident.

On July 17, 2018, at about 10:30 a.m., a Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputy on patrol in the area of Highway 101 and Giuntoli Lane observed a vehicle with expired registration and a non- functioning brake light traveling north on Highway 101. When the deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle, the driver, later identified as 41-year-old Leon Rockwell Peel of McKinleyville, failed to pull over, leading the deputy on an approximately one-mile pursuit through McKinleyville. The vehicle yielded in the parking lot of a shopping center on the 1500 block of Anna Sparks Way.

Peel refused to provide the deputy with identification, vehicle registration or proof of insurance. When the deputy requested Peel step out of the vehicle, Peel then fled in the vehicle through several neighborhoods. With help from community members, deputies located the vehicle on Ocean Ave. near the Hammond Trail. Upon deputies’ arrival, Peel fled on foot into a nearby wooded area. Deputies were unable to locate Peel in the wooded area.

On July 20, deputies served an arrest warrant at a residence associated with Peel on the 1600 block of Bird Ave. in McKinleyville.
Peel was taken into custody without incident. Peel was booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on charges of felony evading a peace officer, resisting arrest, driving without a license, driving without current registration and driving with a non-functional break light.
