Humboldt Roller Derby Kicks Many an Ass at Bakersfield Tournament
We see them rolling!
In case you are somehow still unaware, Humboldt’s hometown roller derby squad is pretty good at what they do! Further evidence to this fact could be found this past weekend in Bakersfield. Learn more in the Humboldt Roller Derby press release below:
Humboldt Roller Derby’s charter team, the Redwood Rollers, earned first place at this year’s 9th
annual Dustbowl Invitational Tournament in Bakersfield, CA. The Redwood Rollers played and
won against the following teams: Unforgiven Roller Girls from Bakersfield, CA, the Mainland
Misfits from Cloverdale, British Columbia, and SoCal Roller Derby, from the San Diego area.
The tournament brought together 9 teams who are all part of the Women’s Flat Track Derby
Association (WFTDA), and all of the games count towards international rankings.
Flat track roller derby is a fast-growing sport that differs from the banked track roller derby that
many people remember watching from 1930s through 1980s. Flat track roller derby originated
in the early 2000s in Texas, and Humboldt Roller Derby formed in 2006 to play this new and
exciting sport. Twelve years later, Humboldt Roller Derby has four adult teams that play regular
home and travel games, a training camp program for new adult skaters interested in trying the
sport, and a junior league, the Redwood Saplings, for youth ages 11-17.
Want to catch the local roller derby fever? On Saturday, March 31st , come out to Redwood
Acres and watch Humboldt Roller Derby’s newly-christened competitive “B” team, Root Force,
will take on Undead Roller Derby, from Antioch, CA. Our Redwood Saplings will also be
playing a full game against the Mo-town Misfits, a co-ed junior derby team from Turlock, CA.
