Humboldt Bay Fire scrambled to the Highland Park neighborhood a few minutes ago on report of a fire at the Jacobs Educational Center, the abandoned buildings just south of Alice Birney School on Allard Avenue.

Heavy black smoke was reported coming from the structure. Many trucks and engines were sent, and Arcata Fire came down to cover Eureka.

But then the first units on scene discovered that the fire was on the outside of the building, rather than inside, and it was quickly extinguished. Firefighters stuck around to make certain it hadn’t spread to the building.

Humboldt Bay Fire’s Tony Freeman told the Outpost that this was likely a transient fire.
