‘Tis the season to reflect on all the ways in which the previous year was rad. The badasses at Humboldt Roller Derby are no different than the rest of us and have filed a year-end holiday letter of sorts which you can read below:

Humboldt Roller Derby is thrilled to share our success with our supportive community this Thanksgiving week, as our 2018 season is coming to a close!

As you feast with your family, we’ll be carbo-loading while enjoying the knowledge that we feasted on our competitors throughout this season. Our charter team, the Redwood Rollers, rose more than 50 spots in international rankings! The Rollers gobbled up the derby charts and are currently ranked 114 out of 358 qualifying teams within the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), our sport’s governing body.

And govern bodies we did, squashing the competition and coming out in first place at the Dustbowl Tournament in Bakersfield and the Battle by the Border Tournament in British Columbia.

The Rollers carved out more wins right here at home, winning four out of five home games, with their only loss all season being by a mere three points.

We are extraordinarily grateful to our Volunteer Army and all of our generous 2018 season sponsors for the extra helpings of support. Our league is entirely skater-driven and volunteer-run, and our supporters are essential to our ability to empower athletic, strong women and girls in this community. Humboldt Roller Derby is working hard to attract a cornucopia of returning and new sponsors for our 2019 season. Sponsoring our league will not only make you or your business look incredibly cool, we also offer amazing advertising opportunities in our season program, at games, via social media, and more! Season program ads are needed ASAP, so hurry those buns up and email sponsorship@humboldtrollerderby.com to get in on all the options.

Our 2019 season kicks off with a thrilling game on Saturday, Jan. 26 at Redwood Acres, so mark your calendars! For folks who remember the days of local roller derby games selling out, we now hold more tickets at the door so you can get in day-of with no hassle. Our games are full-production entertainment, with live music, announcing, beverages and food for sale, and fabulous merchandise. Kids under 10 are always free. Join us to eat up all the excitement of modern roller derby, whether you’re a longtime fan or have never seen it before. If you can’t wait that long to see real live derby, come to our free public scrimmage at Redwood Acres on Thursday, December 13 th – first whistle is at 7:30 pm, where you’ll have a chance to see skaters of all levels play in a full-length scrimmage (Facebook event here).

We are also recruiting new skaters for our 17-week training camp, which begins Jan. 8. Training camp meets 3 days a week and you don’t need any experience – we teach you the basic skills to play derby in a fun environment, with all trainees practicing non- contact skate skills for several months before moving to more advanced skills. Pre-registration is required by emailing recruitment@humboldtrollerderby.com — go here for more information.

Humboldt Roller Derby has been rolling strong since 2006, and has four adult teams that play regular home and travel games, a training camp program for new adult skaters interested in trying the sport, and a junior league, the Redwood Saplings, for youth ages 11-17.
