12 people, including a sheriff sergeant, were killed by a gunman who opened fire at a country music bar in Thousand Oaks, California late Wednesday night. The gunman was discovered dead at the scene.

Around 11:20 p.m. police officers were called to the Borderline Bar and Grill, which is located some 40 miles west from downtown Los Angeles, after calls were made of shots fired. The bar, popular with students from nearby universities, was packed for its regular “College Country Night.”

Officials recovered a single handgun and a “smoke device” from the scene. Multiple people sustained non-fatal injuries.
