The Humboldt marten, a local critter that was officially put on California’s endangered species list last month, was featured in one of Americas longest running newspaper comics on Sunday.

Humboldt martens were the subject of yesterday’s “Mark Trail” comic strip, an environmentally themed cartoon based on the adventures of photojournalist Mark Trail.

In Sunday’s comic, Mark informs readers about California’s efforts to protect the marten, and puts Emerald Triangle marijuana growers on blast for using rodenticides that poison the endangered creatures.

“The newest threat to these fierce, furry mammals is habitat loss due to cannabis cultivation!” the comic reads.
