California Highway Patrol release:

Earlier today, the CHP Humboldt dispatch center received calls of two vehicles traveling eastbound on SR 299 with witnesses reporting that gunshots had been fired from each vehicle. CHP officers assigned to the Willow Creek resident post were able to locate the vehicles and conducted a felony stop. Only one of the vehicles yielded at that time, and occupants of the vehicle were detained. CHP officers from the Trinity River office in Weaverville located the second vehicle in the Big Bar area and conducted a felony stop, detaining the occupants of that vehicle as well. It was determined that at least one subject had sustained a gunshot wound. Multiple firearms were seized as well.

The California Highway Patrol is the primary agency and is continuing its investigation. We would also like to acknowledge the assistance of the Humboldt County and Trinity County Sheriff’s Departments. Due to the logistics of the incident and the fact that several agencies have been, and will be, involved in the collection of information and evidence, a more detailed press release will be provided at a later time.

We want to inform the public that there is no ongoing threat or danger as a result of this incident. Thank you also to the citizens who called in to report this and allowed officers to promptly respond and prevent injury to the public.

Anyone with information related to this investigation is encouraged to call the Humboldt CHP office during business hours at 707-822-5981, or the call the 24-hour public dispatch number of 707-268-2000.
