The McKinleyville Panthers responded to their first loss of the season by beating Shasta 6-1 in their second game at the Wolfpack Invitational at Shasta on Friday.

Earlier in the day, the Panthers suffered their first loss of the season, 6-3 to Chico.

The Mack girls are now 15-1.

In other softball action on Friday, Eureka remained unbeaten in league play with a doubleheader sweep at Fortuna, while Arcata and Del Norte split a doubleheader that took more than five hours to complete.

In the Little 4, St. Bernard’s defeated Ferndale 10-8 to go to 6-0 in the Little 4 at the halfway stage.

The Mack bats were held to just two hits in the opener and the Panthers trailed throughout.

Mikayla Minton had a double and Grace Rosebrook added the team’s only other hit, with McKenzie Gonsalves pitching all seven innings in the loss, allowing eight hits and four earned runs, while striking out seven.

In game two, the McKinleyville bats fared better, scoring their six runs on eight hits.

Lexi White and Olivia Alves each finished with two hits, including a double, and two RBIs.

Each also scored a pair of runs.

Gonsalves pitched all five innings for the win, allowing just three hits, while contributing at the plate with a double and two RBIs.

Ashley Ballew, Jaycee Morais and Jada Bailey each also had a hit in the win.

The Panthers continue tournament play on Saturday.

The Eureka bats exploded for 38 hits over the two games, as the Loggers completed the league sweep of the Huskies and improved to 4-0 in the Big 5.

The win was the seventh straight for the high-octane Loggers, who are now 10-2 overall and remain well in the chase for the league title.

They did, however, have to withstand a late Fortuna rally in game two, as the Huskies battled back from a 12-0 deficit to make things interesting late.

Sophomore pitcher Alexa Morehouse got the win in the opener and the save in game two, coming back in to shut down the Fortuna rally.

Sadie Wilkinson had the big hit of the day, hitting a home run in game one.

For Fortuna, Paige Johnson had a huge day at the plate, going 5-for-7 over the two games with six RBIs.

The Loggers will play at Arcata on Tuesday.

Fortuna dropped to 0-9 in the Big 5 and 3-13 overall.
