The Arcata Tigers remained well in the hunt for the Big 5 title with a doubleheader sweep at home to Del Norte on Friday, winning comfortably 10-1 and 11-2.
The Tigers took advantage of some quality pitching and another big day from freshman infielder Vincent Agliolo, who had five hits over the two games to key the offensive onslaught.
Junior Asher Meadows pitched the win in the opener, allowing just one earned run on seven hits, while striking out six.
Agliolo and Xavier Finegan each finished with three hits in the win, while Brian Ford added a pair of doubles.
Mason Trapkus also finished with two hits in the win.
“I thought the kids really swung the bat well today,” Arcata head coach Troy Ghisetti said. “And defensively we did a good job, and I thought we played the short game very well.”
Jaden Gorge pitched the win in the nightcap, with another solid performance for the senior leader who has been consistently impressive this spring.
“He’s solid,” Ghisetti said of Gorge. “The kid is like a video game, you put the ball in his hands and let him go. He just goes out there to compete every single day.”
Gorge allowed just two runs on seven hits in a complete-game performance.
Agliolo had two more hits for the Tigers.
With the two wins, the Tigers improved to 7-2 in the Big 5 and 17-2 overall, having swept three games from both Del Norte and Fortuna.
The Tigers will have a bye in league play next week before a crucial three-game series with Eureka the following week.
Arcata plays St. Bernard’s next Friday.
Del Norte dropped to 0-7 and 3-10-1.
