The Hoopa Valley girls won a doubleheader at South Fork on Saturday, but they had to battle all the way.

The Warriors took the opener 4-3 in nine innings, and followed that with a 4-2 win in the nightcap, improving to 4-2 in the Little 4 at the halfway stage.

“I think we played fairly well for the situation we’re in, without getting a lot of games in,” Hoopa head coach Glenn Moore said. “We’re still figuring some things out. It’s really hard without a lot of games.”

Savannah Colegrove pitched both wins for the Warriors, who responded after dropping two at league leaders St. Bernard’s last week.

She had eight strikeouts on the day.

Naschewen Hunsucker led the way at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with a home run, while teammate Beyonce Bussell was 2-for-5 with a double.

Emerald Bibancos also had a double and an RBI.

“What impressed me in the first game is we never gave up,” the head coach said. “And I think we’re finally finding our own with our hitting.”

Moore also paid tribute to a much improved South Fork team.

“We had to work for our wins today,” he said.
