From the California Highway Patrol:

On 04-01-2019, at just after 3 PM, California Highway Patrol dispatch began receiving calls of a black Range Rover and white Chevrolet Suburban involved in an altercation on SR-299 west of Willow Creek.

Witnesses reported a subject in the Range Rover had stopped and fired a gun at the occupants of the Suburban. Both vehicles fled eastbound on SR-299, toward Willow Creek. CHP Officers, with assistance from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, located the vehicles and conducted a felony stop. The Range Rover yielded and the driver, 31-year-old Christopher Canfield of Arcata, was detained. The Suburban continued eastbound but was eventually located and stopped on SR-299 in Trinity County.

Canfield was subsequently arrested on suspicion of allegedly firing a weapon at the Suburban and striking one of the occupants. Officers located and seized a loaded handgun from Canfield’s vehicle.

Canfield was booked into the Humboldt County Jail on several charges, including attempted murder and possession of a loaded firearm by a convicted felon. The injured victim was transported to Trinity Hospital in Weaverville for treatment of his injuries.

The California Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation into this incident and asks anyone with information to call the Humboldt Area office at 707-822-5981 or email Humboldt_Area.Humboldt_Area@chp.ca.gov.

CHP would like to thank the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, the Arcata Police Department and the Trinity County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in this investigation.
