The Eureka JVs completed another memorable season in baseball this past weekend, defeating Arcata 9-1 in the championship game at the Arcata Tournament on Saturday.

The Loggers went 3-0 at the two-day tournament, closing out the season with an impressive record of 15-1.

Sophomore Brayden Youkey got the win on the mound in the championship game, and has been a leader all season for the Loggers, along with catcher Ben Tehan and shortstop Ethan Pesch.

“They’re all gritty players,” third-year head coach Shannon Rodgers said of this year’s team. “We didn’t have one big standout that carried the team. It was a group effort.”

Freshman third baseman Richard Reeves also had a big tournament for the Loggers, while Connor Johnson played a big role on a pitching staff that was a team strength in 2019.

“Our pitching carried us all season long,” the head coach said. “Our pitching was outstanding.”

The Eureka pitchers had a team ERA of 1.59.

The Loggers’ only loss this season came against St. Bernard’s, and was only their second loss in three years.

Youkey, Tehan and Pesch will all join the varsity roster for the remainder of the season.

The Loggers also defeated Del Norte 17-3 and Fortuna 8-6 at the tournament.
