Four local basketball players have been named to the MaxPreps all-state teams, including Big 5 MVP Kaleya Sanchez of Del Norte, who was named to the girls Division-4 first team.
Also included were St. Bernard’s senior Emily Gardner, Hoopa senior George Navarro and St. Bernard’s junior Lane Thrap.
The girls teams were announced on Tuesday, with the boys teams named earlier in the month.
Sanchez, who was also named Big 5 MVP in volleyball, scored 19.7 points a game on the way to leading the Warriors to an historic season.
The Del Norte girls won a first-ever Big 5 title in the sport, and added a Dick Niclai championship and a deep playoff run.
A four-year varsity starter, Sanchez will leave Del Norte as the program’s all-time leading scorer with 1,475 career points.
Gardner was the co-MVP of the Little 4 along with St. Bernard’s teammate Jasa Sisemore, helping the Division-V Crusaders to a final four appearance in state play, while winning a North Coast Section championship along the way.
The senior center played a pivotal role in her team’s success, amassing more than 1,000 career points in her time with the school and walking away with three NCS championships.
Gardner was named to the Division-V girls all-state second team.
Navarro also led his team to a league title, and the Little 4 MVP was named to the Division-V boys all-state second team.
The senior guard had a remarkable season, averaging 31 points and more than two steals a game, as the Warriors made it back to the NorCal tournament for the first time in 15 years.
Thrap also enjoyed a stellar campaign, and was named to the boys NorCal Division-6 second team.
Thrap, who averaged 22.6 points a game for the Crusaders, was just one of two non-seniors among the 10 players featured on both the first and second teams.
