Arcata High will host the first annual Coach Cheek Invitational softball tournament this weekend, with the action getting under way on Friday afternoon.

The tournament will feature six teams playing three games each in a round robin format and will be held at the Arcata Sports Complex.

In addition to the host school, Fortuna, Del Norte and Hoopa will all be on hand, along with Cloverdale and Elsie Allen.

Cloverdale will be favorites and come into the weekend as the top-ranked Division-IV team in the North Coast Section, one spot ahead of McKinleyville and four spots ahead of Arcata.

The tournament will honor legendary local coach Frank Cheek, whose daughter Teresa Stavert is the Arcata head coach.

Coach Cheek came out of retirement this season to lend a hand with the Arcata Tigers.
