The Fortuna Huskies got some valuable reps against their Big 4 opponents at a scrimmage in Eureka on Friday, as they get set for their season opener on the road against Cardinal Newman next week.

And while a young Fortuna squad struggled at times against both Eureka and Del Norte, head coach Mike Benbow believes the experience will benefit his players.

“I thought that we looked young,” the head coach said. “We found out a few things, and we got to see a bunch of things we need to work on.”

The Huskies will have a short turnaround, with a Thursday night kickoff, and they will be challenged right off the bat against a powerhouse Cardinals program.

But scrimmaging against the physical Loggers and Warriors will help prepare the inexperienced Huskies.

“I think any time you go against somebody else is huge,” Benbow said. “It’s important to see some game speed. I think we have a very young team and to go up against some very good teams was important for us.”

Both Del Norte and Eureka impressed at the three-team scrimmage, with the Loggers unveiling their new-look team and several players standing out.

The Huskies will now their turn to the Cardinals.

“We have a lot to improve upon,” Benbow said. “Overall, we have to block and tackle and do the little things better, and we’re going to try and get better each time we go to practice.”
