Orville “Ozzie” Smith was born March 1, 1925 in Pepperwood, California to Iva and Harry Smith. He was one of seven children in the family. He lived his entire life in Humboldt County until being drafted into the army at the age of 18 before completing his senior year at Fortuna High School. He served in the South Pacific during World War II, where he was wounded and received the Purple Heart.
After the war was over Orville was honorably discharged before returning home to Fortuna where he lived the rest of his life. He became a member of the Masonic Lodge. He met Jo Ann McLure and the were married in June of 1947. They were married 72 years. They owned and operated Bob’s Footlongs for 40 years before they retired.
Orville and Jo Ann had two children, Mike (Karen) and Debi Moore (Doug); two grand children, Dean and Jocelyn Godinho; and three great grandchildren, William, Kazmar and Ozzie.
Orville also leaves behind numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. His parent, brothers and sisters predeceased him.
There will be a service at Goble’s Fortuna Mortuary on Wednesday, Dec. 11 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the charity of your choice.
