Harold
Harry “Weeps” Campbell was born on November 15, 1934 and
transitioned into the eternal dance place on December 8, 2019. He was
the son of Harry and Violet Socktish-Campbell. Weeps was a
full-blooded Hupa Tribal Member born and raised in the Hoopa Valley.
He graduated from Hoopa High School in 1954 and went on to attend
Humboldt State University. While there, Weeps continued a passion for
Football, donning #39 as offensive guard for the HSU Lumberjacks.
While in college he found the love of his life — Mary Branham. Mary
and Weeps both attended Hoopa High School but it wasn’t until they
were reunited at HSU that their relationship grew. They married in
1956, built a home together, raised two boys and enjoyed 63 years of
marriage.
Throughout the summer and fall of his life, Weeps gave many years in service towards the development and growth of the Hoopa Valley Tribe. Rarely idle, he spent many of this younger years logging in the woods. In 1967, he took some time to pursue barber college and enjoyed cutting and grooming hair for many years after. His time was also spent in the Hoopa Tribal Fisheries, HUD, Roads and Plant Management departments, where he constructed and maintained many houses in the Valley including the old adobe houses near the school and the tribal fish hatchery.
A jack-of-all-trades, a skillful carpenter, builder, farmer, mechanic and welder – you name it, Weeps could do it, but most of those who knew him knew he was a cowboy at heart. Horsemanship and raising livestock was a passion he would carry with him throughout his life. When he wasn’t planting and bailing hay, plowing fields, driving cattle, and riding horses, he enjoyed driving and fixing tractors and farm equipment. His weekends and days off were all spent “running the ranch” on Bald Hill. One of his favorite things to do was drive the cattle across the river in summer to spend days and nights in the high country at Box Camp.
Weeps could always be seen cheering on his sons’ — and all his grandkids’, nieces’ and nephews’ — sporting events, whether it was football, basketball, baseball, volleyball, softball, ballet or rodeo. He truly enjoyed attending their events and rarely missed one. He attended hundreds of rodeos and horse auctions in his lifetime, and more recently enjoyed spending time on the rodeo circuit watching his granddaughter compete in barrel racing. He and Mary became known as “Grandpa and Grandma” to many youth on the rodeo trail.
A traditional and well-respected man, Weeps was fluent in the Hupa Language since birth. He was known and revered for his vast knowledge and as a keeper of the “old ways.” On any given day he could be seen sitting outside on his picnic table engaged in deep conversation with someone. He was a great man, husband, father, brother, uncle, friend and community member, he will be dearly missed. He thought a lot about people and people thought a lot about him.
