The Loggers continued to impress on the wrestling mats over the weekend with another strong early-season showing at the West Coast Women’s Tournament of Champions.
The Eureka girls placed 10th out of 57 teams at the prestigious tournament, a strong showing for a team that was missing wrestlers in five of 14 weight classes.
Aracely Rendon (189 pounds) and Helena Rogers (170) led the way for the Loggers, who have chosen to compete at some tougher out-of-area tournaments this season in order to continue to build their program.
“We have chosen to stray from the normal tournament schedule to a more challenging year as our girls mature in the sport,” head coach Cecil Wilson said in a press release this week.
Rendon has been sensational through the early season, going 5-0 at the tournament and stretching her winning streak to 15 straight to start the new season.
The Eureka senior is ranked second in the state in her weight class.
Rogers was seeded second in her division and battled back from a third-round loss to place third, finishing 6-1 at the tournament to bring her season record to 11-2.
The Loggers also competed at the JV tournament over the weekend, with a number of impressive performances, including Yareli Rendon and Ava Begovic, who placed first and second in their respective weight classes.
Earlier this month, the Loggers competed at a six-team Newark Iron Man dual match tournament, posting a very impressive team win over Albany, the defending state champion.
