The College of the Redwoods bats were a lot more productive on Friday, and the defense a lot more stable, as the Corsairs posted their first win of the softball season in a doubleheader split.

The Redwoods women lost 10-2 to Santa Rosa in the morning game, and followed that with a 13-7 win over Gavilan.

After dropping both ends of their season-opening doubleheader against Foothill on Thursday, when they managed just five hits combined and committed six errors, the Corsairs fared far better on Friday.

Offensively, the CR bats exploded for 24 hits, while defensively they had just a single error in each game.

In game one, Bronwyn Gilfillan finished with two of CR’s six hits, while Dakota Small and Adriana Chavez each hit a double and Juliana Ortega-Miranda drove in one of the team’s two runs.

Ashley Stockwell took the loss in the pitcher’s circle, as the Santa Rosa women struck early with five runs in the bottom of the first.

Stockwell added a hit at the plate.

In game two, the Corsairs broke out with 18 hits, four of them by Ortega-Miranda, who hit a double and drove home three more runs.

Chavez and Lindsey Scott each finished with three hits, including a triple and a pair of doubles by Chavez, giving her four extra-base hits for the day.

Chavez also drove in three runs, and Scott one.

Scott pitched the win, improving to 1-1 on the early season.

Pheobe Marsh, Lily Peterson and Amy Reyes each also had two hits, with the latter driving in three runs.

Gilfillan and Becca Tripp rounded out the offensive onslaught with a hit each.

The Corsairs are now 1-3, while Santa Rosa is 4-5 and Gavilan 3-7.

The CR women play another doubleheader on Saturday at Chabot, against both Siskiyous and the host school at noon and 2 p.m.
