The Humboldt State men’s basketball team continued its remarkable turnaround from a year ago with another thrilling win on Saturday night, defeating visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills 68-67 at Lumberjack Arena.

The win lifts the Jacks to 9-0 at home this season and 7-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

The game was one of two exciting showdowns at Lumberjack Arena on Saturday, with the HSU women’s team edging out Cal State Dominguez Hills in overtime.

Women

Humboldt State 73, CS Dominguez Hills 63, OT

The Jacks saw a 10-point lead disappear in the final five-and-a-half minutes of regulation, before pulling away again in overtime to win by 10.

Isamar Conde scored 24 to lead the Jacks, who won their second straight to improve to 6-4 in conference and 8-5 overall.

Alexia Thrower finished with a double-double, scoring 20 and pulling down 11 rebounds, while Madeline Hatch had 12 points and three steals, and Tyra Turner 10 points, six assists and six boards.

“I really thought this was our best defensive game of the year,” said HSU head coach Michelle Bento-Jackson, whose team led 28-18 after the opening two quarters

The Jacks are tied with Chico State (6-4) for fifth in the conference standings, just one win behind both CS San Marcos and San Francisco State (7-3).

The Jacks will travel to play Cal State East Bay on Thursday.

Men

Humboldt State 68, CS Dominguez Hills 67

A missed jumper by the visitors in the final second handed the Jacks another thrilling win at home, this time by the smallest of margins and featuring a big second-half comeback.

Trailing by 10 at halftime, the Jacks rallied to outscore the visitors 37-26 in the second half, giving them a key win over one of their closest conference rivals.

The victory keeps the HSU men undefeated at home this season in nine games, including three thrilling conference wins over Chico State, Cal State LA and now Dominguez Hills.

Justin Everett scored 12 points and had a team-high eight rebounds in the win, while teammate Calvin Young II finished with team-highs in points (14) and assists (five).

With the win, the Jacks are now in sole possession of third place in the conference standings, trailing only UC San Diego (9-1) and Cal State East Bay (8-2), and one win ahead of a chasing pack of three six-win teams.

The Jacks travel to play at Cal State East Bay on Thursday, where a win would see them move up into second place in the CCAA.
