Carolyn E. Green
January 11, 1932 - January 21, 2019
Services will be held Saturday for Carolyn E. Green, 87, of Redway.
Carolyn died peacefully Monday at Brookdale Fortuna, where she had been a resident of the Claire Bridge memory care unit, under the care of Hospice of Humboldt. She was preceded two years ago by her husband of 63 years, Fred Green.
Carolyn was born in David City, Nebraska, where she was raised on a farm along with her three sisters, and attended a one-room school. She graduated from 12th grade at age 16, and earned a degree in Education at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.
At just 20 years old, Carolyn became a teacher in Newport, Oregon, 1,600 miles from home. In the spring of 1953, she attended a dance where she met Fred, and they were married four weeks later by a Justice of the Peace. They moved to Garberville where Fred had landed a job in the timber industry, and later settled in Redway after the birth of their first child.
Carolyn worked for a time as a substitute teacher in the Southern Humboldt Unified School District, but soon turned to a career in accounting. For many years, she was a tax preparer for N. R. “Terry” Tarantino of Miranda, and later took on the bookkeeping duties for a number of small business clients in southern Humboldt County.
Carolyn was an active member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha sorority, where she became life-long friends with other young wives in the Redway/Garberville area. She solicited listings for the Southern Humboldt “Community Birthday Calendar,” and was involved with the Garberville Rodeo Queen competitions in the 1960s. She was also an excellent pianist, and enjoyed performing for her family. She filled in as the organist at Grace Lutheran Church.
Carolyn is survived by her three children, Bill Green and his wife Judy of Martinez, California, Tom Green of Garberville, and Laurie Green of Redway; two granddaughters, Amy Danish and her husband Chris of Aptos, California, and Sara Love of Muskogee, Oklahoma; a sister, Kathleen Kennedy and her husband Tom of Glendora, California; two nieces, Janet Labenz and her husband Rich, and Jeanne Butzke and her husband Milo, of Lincoln Nebraska; and five great-grandchildren, Sam, Abby, and Mackenzie Danish, and Alexis and Lucas Love.
Funeral services are scheduled for noon Saturday at Gobles Fortuna Mortuary, 560 12th St., Fortuna, with visitation to begin at 11 a.m. Carolyn will be laid to rest alongside Fred at Sunrise Cemetery, 3315 Newburg Rd., Fortuna.
