The College of the Redwoods baseball team opened the season with a doubleheader split at home to Mendocino on Friday afternoon.

The unusual January series in Humboldt County is being played at Bomber Field across from the Redwood Acres, where the Corsairs will host their games this season.

CR opened with a 17-5 loss to the Eagles, before responding to pull out a 4-2 win in the nightcap.

The series decider will be played on Saturday at noon.

Luis Pimentel pitched the win in game two, striking out eight in five innings, while Lucas Hardy came in to toss four innings in relief, striking out five for the save.

At the plate Gannon Cyphers led the way, finishing 3-for-4.

In game one, Gavin Brown took the loss on the mound.

Garrett Johnson led the way at the plate, going 2-for-3.
