EPD: Alleged Car Thief Attempts Escape Past Sequoia Park Duck Pond Before Being Thwarted by Locked Playground Gate
Eureka Police Department press release:
On 01-28-2019 at about 5:00 am, officers of the Eureka Police Department (EPD) were
dispatched to the 3400 block of L Street for vehicle theft report. The reporting party stated
that their vehicle had been stolen out of their driveway, while it was unoccupied and warming
up.
Officers began checking the area for the vehicle. A few moments later, an Officer located the
vehicle being driven near 17th and J Streets. The vehicle fled and a pursuit ensued. The pursuit
lasted several minutes with up to three different patrol units being involved. The vehicle’s
speed reached approximately 70 mph and the vehicle ran through several controlled
intersections (stop signs or traffic control signals).
At one point, the vehicle turned from Glatt Street down the one-way single lane road to the
duck pond, where it finally stopped at the Sequoia Park playground interior gate, off of W
Street. The driver (and only occupant of the vehicle) quickly exited the vehicle and was taken
into custody without incident. The driver was identified as Shiloh John Chase (41 years old).
The stolen vehicle suffered one flat tire, but was otherwise undamaged. Chase was booked
into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility (HCCF) on fresh charges of vehicle theft,
evading, and probation revocation. Chase is not eligible for bail, due to a probation hold.
The Eureka Police Department would like to remind citizens not to leave their vehicles
unoccupied, unsecured and running. This creates an unsafe situation that can often times lead
to theft of the vehicle.
